The Importance of Sunscreen

As we spend more time outdoors during the warm summer months, it's important to protect our skin from the harmful effects of the sun. Sunscreen is a crucial part of any skincare routine, regardless of skin type. Not only does it prevent sunburn, but it also reduces the risk of skin cancer and premature aging.

For those with oily skin, it's important to choose a sunscreen that is non-comedogenic and oil-free to avoid clogging pores. Look for a formula that is lightweight and easy to blend, such as a gel or spray.

On the other hand, those with dry skin should opt for a sunscreen that is moisturizing and contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin. These ingredients help to hydrate the skin and prevent it from drying out in the sun.

If you have sensitive skin, choose a sunscreen that is fragrance-free and contains physical blockers like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These ingredients are less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions.

No matter your skin type, make sure to apply sunscreen liberally and reapply every two hours if you are spending an extended period of time outdoors. Don't forget to apply to commonly missed areas like the ears, scalp, and tops of the feet.

At Southwest Family Medicine Associates in Dallas we want you to make sure to incorporate sunscreen into your daily routine and enjoy the great outdoors with peace of mind.
